As of July 1, 2015, under Illinois state law, South Suburban College is now a smoke-free campus. The law prohibits every individual from smoking on College property. This means that tobacco in any form will be prohibited within the boundaries of the Main Campus in South Holland, IL and the Oak Forest Center campus in Oak Forest, IL.
The South Suburban College Board Policy 207.02 – Smoking/Non-Smoking Regulations states:
“As of July 1, 2015, under Illinois state law, South Suburban College is a smoke-free campus. All South Suburban College property is smoke-free. The law prohibits every individual from smoking on College property.
“College property” means any property owned, leased, occupied, operated or otherwise controlled by South Suburban College, including but not limited to academic and auxiliary buildings, classrooms, laboratories, elevators, stairwells, restrooms, roofs, meeting rooms, hallways, lobbies and other common areas, athletic complexes and facilities, exterior open spaces, shuttle buses, shuttle bus stops, parking lots, driveways, loading docks, College-owned streets, sidewalks and walkways.
“Smoke” or “smoking” means the carrying, smoking, burning, inhaling, or exhaling of any kind of lighted pipe, cigar, cigarette, e-cigarette, hookah, weed, herbs, or other lighted smoking equipment. “Smoke” or “smoking” also includes products containing or delivering nicotine intended or expected for human consumption.
The South Suburban College website shall indicate that all Campus Property is smoke free and shall include a campus map indicating the areas in which smoking is prohibited. All organizations utilizing Campus Property shall be informed of the Smoke Free Campus Policy and shall be responsible for informing attendees and enforcing the Policy.
For students, violation of the smoke-free law will result in a referral to the Dean of Student Development and discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
For employees, violation of the smoke-free law will result in referral to the appropriate Department Chair, Dean or area Vice President. Discipline for those employees who are included in a bargaining unit shall be progressive in accordance with the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement. Discipline for administrators and technical/professional/exempt employees shall be in accordance with the applicable Board Policy. Bargaining unit employees may appeal any such disciplinary decision through the grievance procedures established by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Administrative and Technical/Professional/Exempt employee appeals shall be in compliance with Board Policy 455.09, Grievance Procedure for Administrators and Technical/Professional/Exempt Staff.
Any non-student or non-staff individual smoking on South Suburban College property will be asked to immediately extinguish the tobacco product. Failure to comply will result in referral to the Campus Police Department.”
